IT support often grows informally: someone is good with computers, so everyone asks them. That works for a while, and then it stops. A few simple changes make support more consistent and devices easier to manage.
Give people one way to ask for help
When requests arrive by chat, email and in passing, some get lost. Choose one place to raise requests, so each issue is recorded, assigned and followed through.
Record issues and their fixes
Note what the problem was and what fixed it. Over time that becomes a reference that saves effort and helps you notice problems that keep coming back.
Standardise how devices are set up
If every laptop is set up differently, every problem takes longer. Agree a standard setup covering the operating system, core applications and security settings, and use it for every new device.
Keep an inventory
List each device, who has it, when it was bought and when it should be reviewed or replaced. An inventory makes renewals and offboarding much easier.
Build an update routine
Decide how often devices and applications are checked for updates and who is responsible. A regular routine beats occasional catch-up.
Review recurring problems
Every so often, look back over the issues raised. Repeated problems point to something worth fixing properly, such as an ageing device or an unclear process.
Be clear about what is supported
Decide which devices, applications and situations are covered and what happens outside them. Clear expectations avoid frustration on both sides.
If you would like help putting any of this in place, we would be glad to talk it through.
